A long time ago, exactly from 43 BC to AD 410, the Romans ruled in Britannia. But only up to Hardrian’s Wall. Behind that wall lived Celtic tribes like the Picts
. All over Britain there are remains of Roman times ...

Roman history

In 54 BC the Romans under Julius Caesar invaded the South of Britain. But the Celtic inhabitants drove them away. In AD 43 the Roman emperor Claudius sent his soldiers to Britain and this time the Romans stayed on the island and ruled there until  AD 410.

Every day life

In front of Hardrian’s Wall the people lived like the Romans did. They had villas with very big bathrooms (they were very important for the Romans), bedrooms, dining rooms, living-rooms, farms and slaves.

The Roman Baths were a meeting point, where the Romans met their friends and made conversation.

The Romans cooked their food in big pots over a charcoal fire in their kitchen. From Spain and France they got fish sauce and olive oil. These were used a lot and kept in amphoras. The rich Romans, for example, ate stuffed dormice and roasted peacock.

Religion

Roman and Celtic religious beliefs were mixed by the people and they believed in Roman and Celtic gods. Rich people were burned after they died, poor people were put in mass graves outside the city. The Roman and Celtic people worshiped their dead relatives.

Money

The romans paid with coins (denarii). The the heaviest coins were the most
valuable ones and some can still be found  in Britain today.
